THIRTEEN

By four o’clock that afternoon, they were back in the car and headed for Christine’s to pick up Daniel. While Sam had talked first to his ex, then to his son, Lacey had gotten with Jerry to coordinate the meeting. The third meeting in four days.

This was getting to be a habit, she thought.

And the worst possible time to be out on the roads. It was early rush hour, working itself into veritable parking-lot mode by the minute.

Christine let them into the apartment. She smiled a greeting, but Lacey thought it didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“Daniel’s almost ready,” she said. In a lower voice, she added, “This is so weird, seeing him getting into this.”

“I know,” Sam said. “I never thought too much about either of the kids inheriting my talent. Or being interested in using it.”

“Well,” she said, glancing toward the hallway, “at least he’s got you to guide him. I’d hate to see him going off on his own with this.”

Lacey hadn’t thought of that, and realized Christine made a good point. Sam, in his youth, had had to figure out how to use his gift all on his own. Even though Ben, Sam’s grandfather, was supportive, he didn’t have the sensitivity Sam did. Daniel, thankfully, had the benefit of all Sam’s self-taught knowledge and experience.

At least until the boy transcended his dad’s reach.

Just then Daniel stepped out of the hallway and joined them in the entry. He stood next to his dad, ready and willing, his erect carriage betraying his nervous excitement.

“Here,” Sam said. He passed the boy a pair of his soft knee-high moccasins. Lacey had noticed Sam had brought the extra pair, even though he had his own already on his feet.

“Try them on,” Sam said. “They might be a little big, but I think they’ll fit okay.”

Daniel recognized the moccasins and raised his eyes to his dad. Lacey thought she saw surprise there on his face, surprise and pride. Daniel took the moccasins, shucked off his tennis shoes, and pulled on the soft suede. When he had them all the way up to his knees, he pulled on the laces to tighten them around his calves.

“Let me see,” Sam said. He checked the fit, pinching the front to feel Daniel’s toes. “Feel okay?” he asked.

“Yeah.” Daniel walked a small, tight circle. “Feels fine.”

“Good,” Sam pronounced. “Those will help you stay grounded.”

“Cool,” Daniel said to himself.

“Okay,” Sam said to Christine. “I don’t think this will take long. We should have him back by dinner time.”

“Fine,” she said. She gave Daniel a brave but winsome smile. “Good luck.”

At the car, Daniel climbed into the back seat behind Lacey. It seemed odd to not have Kenzie with them, she thought. As she started the car, Daniel clapped a hand on her shoulder.

“Hey, Lacey,” he said. “How about letting me drive?” In the rearview mirror, he waggled his eyebrows at her.

“Sure,” she said. “When you’ve got your learner’s permit.”

It was a testament to Daniel’s buoyant mood that he laughed at her reply instead of scowling.
